In Northeast Florida, and across the nation, an educated workforce is critical to economic competitiveness. Despite our community’s strong work ethic and viable job market, too many hard working adults on the First Coast lack the education necessary to land good jobs and fill employers’ skill needs. Many find themselves in low-wage jobs with few or no benefits, and with little opportunity to earn higher wages. To advance in the workplace, the majority of working adults will need solid skills associated with workforce and technical certifications/credentials.
Why is higher educating so essential?
A workforce or technical certificate/credential will increase earning potential but there are other important reasons a certification is becoming a critical requirement. According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunities by 2019 jobs in Florida requiring workforce certifications will grow to 3,161,772, compared to the 1,601,394 jobs that will be available to those who have only a high school diploma or GED.
Easier said then done?
Finding the right educational path, enrollment and financial support can be confusing and hard to navigate. Too often, many adults forgo additional education because of tuition, books, transportation, and childcare expenses.
The A-STEP program, aims to provide working adults in North Florida access to higher education in order to elevate earning potentials and job security. The key to the A-STEP program is the implementation of a successful blend of aptitude and career assessments, professional development classes, individualized mentoring, personalized financial aid advisement, ongoing academic support, and gap funding to put adults on the path to success and long-term sustainability.
Goodwill Industries of North Florida recognizes the workforce and educational challenges facing this population and is addressing this challenge through a newly developed program for adults called A-STEP (Academic Support through the Employment Process). The A-STEP vision is to help move individuals who want to advance their potential through the educational pipeline and towards family sustaining careers. A-STEP is designed to help working individuals pursue, progress through, and complete workforce and technical certifications/credentials.
This program is for those seeking their first Certification or Associate's Degree.
